We Did It
I have been wanting to get a joint account for years. We didn’t really see it as a necessity until now. Part of starting a family for us is buying a house. In order to do that, because we don’t have fucking hundreds of thousands of dollars lying around, a bank is going to have to buy that shit for us and give us a loan.
We opened a joint account with a credit union because they will hopefully offer us a lower interest rate. If you don’t know how this works, check out my post about it. And like, follow me and shit, to stay up to date or whatever.
What It Was Like
Dude it was so fucking easy. They were open on a Saturday. I applied for an account and they emailed me saying I was qualified to be a member. The only thing necessary to be a member is living in this city. They said the only thing we needed to do was show up 30 min before they closed. So knowing us, that is exactly when we showed up.
There was no line, so we were helped immediately. We had to fill out some paperwork. It was two forms, one for the primary account holder, and one for the joint account. That was the hardest part, was to decide who would be the primary. We decided me since this whole goddamn thing was my idea.
It was maybe a 10 min wait. Then we sat down with a very sweet woman who went over the forms with us. (We filled out some of that shit wrong lol.) 20 mins later we had an account and all we had to do was deposit $25 into savings. There are no fees or anything, but the only rule is we have to keep that $25 in there. Seriously easy peasy. (Is that how you spell peasy? What does that mean?)
What’s Next
The next step is to put more than $25 in our account 🤣. I just got another direct deposit form from work so I can switch over to this new joint account. Then I have to switch all of my automatic bill paying to the new account. And then I need to close my US Bank account with all of its bullshit fees.
We know how much house we can afford thanks to Bankrate. Next, next we need to get pre-approved for a home loan. Once we do that we need to get a real estate agent (we “know” one, so that should be easy.)
Then we need to like buy a house or whatever. And then put a baby in it. I’m already on Zillow, don’t worry.
What do you think? Do you have a joint account? Are we just making it harder to get divorced if that happens? Let us know in the comments.
